So my question was why, from an economic point of view, was the EU enlargement desirable? I am not sure I have seen a real answer to this question yet.

Since when is anything that the EU does desirable from an economic point of view?

Consider the Kyoto treaty
Consider the policies of Mario Monti
Consider what it means to raise them up to EU standards
