Group Formed To Push E911 BY WIRELESS WEEK STAFF FEBRUARY 20, 2003 NEWS@2 DIRECT WASHINGTON - A bi-partisan Congressional group is forming a new coalition, called the Congressional E911 Caucus, to help get enhanced 911 networks deployed.
Consisting of members of Congress as well as local E911 officials from around the country, the Congressional E911 Caucus is 'committed to elevating the issues of 911 and implementing an agenda to strengthen our country's ability to better respond and communicate in times of emergencies,' according to a statement issued by the group.
Founding members of the coalition include Sen. Conrad Burns, R-Mont.; Sen. Hillary Clinton, D.-N.Y.; Rep. Anna Eshoo, D-Calif.; and Rep. John Shimkus, R-Ill., along with John Melcher, president of the National Emergency Number Association; Thera Bradshaw, president of the Association of Public Safety Communications; and public safety, fire and law enforcement representatives from across the country.
'We'll be talking about the need for attention for a number of E911 issues,' says Steve Seitz, director of legal affairs for NENA. That attention could lead to Congressional action on a number of E911 issues from homeland defense, rural service, state funding of E911 programs, and deployment of advancing emergency technology, he says.
