<<history as mechanism>> I like the aphorism, "history does not repeat, but it rhymes" I see relying on past events and rules of thumb as a poor substitute for positive knowledge about something. If there is absolutely no other choice, but to rely solely on historical evidence, then I will do so, but it always feels like I'm driving through the rear-view mirror. Cargo-cult science is what Richard Feynman used to call it and I think that's apt. Regarding gold, maybe history is the best guide we have. If so, then great. I certainly have not come up with much better, or I would have said so before, but I am still looking for now.
