China plans to produce between 190 and 200 tonnes of gold in 2003, the official Xinhua News Agency reported on Friday.

China produced a record 189.8 tonnes of gold in 2002, Xinhua quoted Cheng Fumin, head of the State Economic and Trade Commission's Gold Bureau as saying.

China's gold industry posted profits of 1.58 billion yuan ($190.9 million) last year, Cheng was quoted as saying. The report gave no comparative figures.
