William - Re : "INTEL will be in the 400-450 range by mid -year 1998 "

This is a slam dunk. They already exist "in the lab". Intel, however, needs to get more powerful chip sets to work at 100 MHz and higher to more fully exploit the >400 MHz speed. Therefore, these chips and chip sets will probably be "delayed" until Q2/Q3 1998. In actuality, the CPUs will ship before then but will be "de-rated" to attractive speeds (>300 MHz), but below their real limit - and they will be marketed with the "slower" chip sets.

Re: "...INTEL is ramping up five fabs at the same time with the new .25 micron processor technology "

Currently, Intel is producing Pentium MMX devices in 0.25 microns at their D2 facility in Santa Clara as well as "prototypes" of the Deschutes chip. Look for these in Q4 of this year.

Simultaneously, Fab 12 in Arizona is being equipped and qualified for the 0.25 micron process and should be on stream for intitial production in September/October of this year.

Fab 11 in New Mexico and Fab 14 in Ireland should be in production in Q1/Q2 time frame next year and Fab 18 in Israel should start up in late 1998 as a 0.25 micron process. This is an alteration of the initial plans for Fab 18 which was, I believe, originally scheduled for non-volatile (Flash) memory production.

I think that accounts for 5 fabs by the end of 1998.
