Cell, WLL firms soften their stand

NEW DELHI: The warring factions of the telecom industry — cellular and limited mobility service providers — have softened their stands at the second meeting of the industry panel set up by Union Communications Minister Arun Shourie.

Both are expected to ask for adjournment of the two court cases pending in the telecom tribunal, TDSAT. The panel will meet again on March 3.

Mukesh Ambani, chairman, Reliance and Rajan Mittal, joint managing director, Bharti attended the meeting unlike the last time when the absence of Bharti and Ambani stalwarts had raised eyebrows. Sunil Mittal is still out of the country and is expected only next week.

However, no consensus was reached on multiple registration scheme (MRS) offered by Reliance. Whether MRS can be considered roaming and will mean substitutability of cellular services was the main topic of discussion in the first meeting held earlier this week.

The cell operators had moved TDSAT, accusing limited mobility operators of violating license conditions and judicial orders of the tribunal, which prohibit roaming.
