We're a word away from action: Rumsfeld

By Caroline Overington, Herald Correspondent in New York and agencies
February 22 2003

The United States military was ready to attack Iraq at a moment's notice, the US Defence Secretary, Donald Rumsfeld, said.

He said on Thursday that a major fighting force, believed to comprise 150,000 American and British troops, and an armada of submarines and aircraft carriers, each of the latter equipped with 50 fighter jets, was assembled in the Persian Gulf region.

Asked if the force was ready for war, Mr Rumsfeld said: "Yes. We are at the point where, if the President makes that decision [to go to war with Iraq], the Department of Defence is prepared and has the capabilities and the strategy to do that."

The US would be joined in war by "a lot of countries" in a "large coalition", whether or not the United Nations backed the strike.

Australia will join the war if it is sanctioned by the UN, but the Prime Minister, John Howard, has not yet decided whether to join a US-led "coalition of the willing" if the UN decides not to sanction the strike.

What would that word be? Idiocy?

Perhaps, this monumental stupidity requires a word uncorrupted by prior usage - I nominate "Dubyacy".

Yell "Dubyacy" and kill a few hundred thousand Iraqis for prosperity and democracy. And give credit where it's due.
