Well Karen, I have a couple of "rule of thumbs" :

- If the same story/news is not reported by BBC+CNN+a major network (like Reuters or AP), within a 24 hour period, I'm sceptical of the validity.

- Op-eds are invariably slanted one way or the other. thats why they're called op-eds. So I discount them a lot, regardless of who the author is.

My approach has a downside - I may not be aware or willing to accept the latest hot news. Thats a price I'm willing to pay, because if its true news, it will be confirmed by multiple sources within 24 hours.
