It is just that their self interest IS self interest--not kissing ass to the self interest of others.
Whose is it we're kissing? I take it that is what you meant.

And I have yet to hear any of the French admit they are at all influenced by their interests in and with Iraq. I have seen vehement denials, though. And claims that they are simply morally superior to the crude, rude American cowboys.

From over here, it looks like like the same sort of cowardly inaction that got them run over in WW2.

I say the next time the Germans want to eat the French, we let them. You Canadians OK with that?

They have designs for European power with themselves as the major player.
They have had that since the end of WW2. That's why they resent the US so much. They are convinced they should have emerged from WW2 as the leader of the West.

It is their sense of distinctiveness (and perhaps their sense of cultural and moral "superority") which makes them a difficult alliance member to accomodate.
Screw accommodating them. Kick them out of NATO and let them take care of themselves. And withdraw from the UN if they are not kicked off the Security Council.

I believe they are assisting us unwittingly by preventing reckless speed and forcing us to forge alliances and mutual cooperation with others.
Nuts. Their clear intent is to prevent those alliances from being forged.

He was right dead right as he sped along,
But he's just as dead as if he were wrong!

Not applicable. That other boat did have right of way under the racing rules. And those rules have force of law for boats engaged in the race. They will stand up in a court.

And we would have been the ones dead.
