Bacchus, The French with their bad colonial administrationm rife with corruption received what they deserved in Vietnam.
The USA made a political decision to go away, due to home pressure and the ongoing reality that the Vietnamese government was so totally corrupt that it did not deserve saving.
As a war it was not popular in the USA. make no mistake, the USA exited for political reasons. Had they wanted to stay and slug it out and win in Vietnam they could have done so, and the cost would be not too high.
But once they saw how bad the ruling elite were, these reports filtered back and the US politicians saw that the Vietnamese people indeed needed to be freed from their rulers.
Now the new rulers of Vietnam and doctrinaire socialists...that means they know nothing of markets or how to build an viable economy. Without the gree revolution, funded by the USA they would be starving.

And there was another war you may not remember, where it was ended politically. I mean the American War of Independence. Supported by France who hated the UK, the british politicians decided to let the USA become free. After that the British completely changed the administrative methods in colonies and freely gave them good domestic infrastructure and left when they were not wanted withour wars of independance.
So now germany and France play games of king of the hill in europe over saddam.

As for France and the USA in WW1, that may or may not be true. I know we British were in deep from early on in WW1, and also feel the USA was not a material factor, since they arrived as the war was winding down.
In WW2 USA men material were crucial.
german tanks and planes were a lot better than the UK planes and tanks, and it was only the huge numbers of planes and tanks from the USA, along with the men to operate them and the foot soldiers that won that war. radar was a factor in the air war too.
As for the link about franc and germany ...comic relief
