It’s Not About the Oil, Already!
Basic economics.
By Peter Ferrara

he American Left and its international comrades are claiming that the impending war with Iraq is not about defanging terrorism. Rather, they say, it's all about oil. They argue that President Bush is really motivated by a desire to seize Iraqi oil for American oil companies (and gas-guzzling American SUV drivers). "No blood for oil!" is their rallying cry.

No basis has ever been cited for this accusation — perhaps because the accusation makes no sense, as a matter of basic economics.

Unless the Iraqis drill and sell their oil, it is worthless to them. They must sell it somewhere on the world oil market to get any gain out of it.

This author appears to be intentionally misunderstanding the accusation leveled against the Bushies. Those who are making the accusation believe the Bushies are conspiring to take over the Iraqi oilfields lock, stock and barrel, and not act as a middleman. There will be no more Iraqis involved and it is expected that the US will pocket all the money it makes selling the oil in the global markets.

Coming from a group that so prides itself on its intellect, I find it curious that the Right seems to misunderstand these arguments with the intent to make them look even less reasonable than they already are. The left has to remain ever vigilant to catch all of these tired manipulations.
