I tell you Shrub has nothing on Chirac in terms of putting his foot in his mouth ! the only thing I found more incredible than Chirac's tirade were the reports (from Le Monde too) that it was not a gaffe, but planned. I find that really incredible. I forget what Truman was ridiculed for a failed haberdasher and the "Senator from Pendergast" JFK however was cut some slack for the good taste to have a wife with a French maiden name :-) Moreover, she had excellent Francophile taste ('excellent' and 'Francophile' being synonymous), she spoke fluent French, and she was a dish.
