Why are Canadians anti-American? My impression (and I'm sure the Canadians on this thread will correct me if I'm wrong) is that the reason is very simple. Canadians are in bed with an 800 pound gorilla named the United States of America, who doesn't even notice their existence most of the time. Most uncomfortable for them, especially when the gorilla rolls over. Trying to establish the nature of their own identity in the midst of a tidal surge of American cultural imports seems to be a consuming problem for the Canadian "chattering classes" (I love the British term). Every time I'm in Canada I notice the underlying refrain of "But we're Canadian, eh" in nearly every forum.
