Not long ago a lot of people were counting on Powell to stop the war drive

Yes, the administration pulled a good cop, bad cop stunt on us. Powell, very likely, was for the "war" all along while talking diplomatic solutions.

US peace movement has left itself very vulnerable by placing such hopes on the UN

The mechanism for stopping the war will come from Europe - the movement will encourage France to veto any second UN resolution. Then Dubya's administration will not have sufficient backing in the US for a unilateral attack thanks in part to the US peace movement (current support is 30% for unilateral action).

That is the most likely scenario for the Peace movement to stop Dubya's rush to war.

Denying UN support to Dubya is the key to preventing the war. Then the costs of invasion may get too high even for Dubya.

Dubya in frustration will yell "irrelevant UN, irrelevant UN" for months to come. It'll be just his own irrelevance.
