Actually, Brumar, you're wrong. The story about Hussain Al-Shahristani, the scientist who was featured this evening on 60 Minutes, has been in this thread's header under the "Smoking Gun; Al Qaeda Connections--Motive for War" secion of the thread's header. It's been there since the Boston Globe printed its story about him. Note, in the above category, it is the seventh link down.
I find him an interesting person. He'd been out of the Iraq nation since '91, and has had numerous public appearances. The "buried in the tunnels" story only came out recently. His information is hearsay, as it comes from someone else who told him about this. He speaks with authority when he claims Iraq, contrary to Bush Administrations assertions, including the president's state of the union speech, that Iraq has no nuclear capability. He also is opposed to the war in the belief the war will do the most harm to Saddam's victims, the people of Iraq.
What the scientist claims seems to back up what I've theorized. In the past on this thread I've noted my belief that indeed Saddam is holding something back from the inspection process. That what he's holding back are the same kinds of chemicals that he used defensively against Iran and the Kurds during past warring conditions.
Saddam didn't use any such weapons during the Kuwait, when he had more of them and he easily could have. History shows he relies on them defensively, seemingly in order to regain positions. It's my suspicion he will use them if the US attacks Baghdad.
I also don't believe the US allegation that there is a terrorist link, due to the inherent contradictions of what Saddam represents and what OBL represents. From my reading, I don't believe Saddam has designed on the US, that his ultimate goal is to become known as the 'topdog' Arab leader, the one who is the strongest and stood up against great odds. In short, a New Age Saladin.
I still consider that it's possible to have talks with him and actually gain his assistance in tracking down the real terrorists: Al Qaeda. But Bush is hellbent and determined to, like Saddam, make a name for himself. It's all too bad because hundreds of thousands of innocents will suffer deeply from this. |
