U.S. Would Quit Iraq as Soon as Possible - Official

DEARBORN, Mich. (Reuters) - A top U.S. defense official told a group of about 200 Iraqi-Americans and immigrants on Sunday that if Saddam Hussein is removed by force, the United States would leave Iraq as quickly as possible.

"If the president should decide to use force, let me assure you again that the United States would be committed to liberating the people of Iraq, not becoming an occupation force," Deputy Defense Secretary Paul Wolfowitz said to applause from the group.

He said, echoing previous statements by Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, that the United States would "stay as long as necessary and leave as soon as possible."

Wolfowitz, considered one of the most hawkish members of the Bush administration, said that the United States "is committed to helping the Iraqi people establish a free, prosperous and peaceful Iraq that serves as a beacon for the region." [...]
