Jacob, you made some good points, but the bellicose nature of your response leaves me little patience for a reasoned rebuttal. Your perception of my broad brush flag-waving-make-my-heart-thump with pride and so forth line, convinces me a dialogue is the furthest thing from your mind.
I'm not a bit hesitant to express how much pride I have in America, it's democratic traditions, and how that example has influenced the world in a positive way. However, that post in no way could be perceived as coming from that point of view, unless you wished it into existence.
The fact is your rebuttal really didn't stand up under scrutiny. I'm no expert on the history of Nazi Germany, but I would bet the population had no idea Hitler was going to take on practically every nation in Europe, torture every Jew, and viciously slaughter those who would oppose his power before he was elected.
If democracies link to peace is as non existence as you seem to suggest, why did Hitler do away with elections once in power? Was he afraid of being thrown out of office? Was he afraid of answering the charges of those who disagreed with his madman approach to governance?
No, I'm not doing any of the things you suggested in the last part of your post. I'm making an assessment, based on a my heuristic judgement, derived from my reading of history, and the positive view of where I see this world heading.
Pessimism has no perfect hold on accuracy. Anyone can be pessimistic, it's quite easy. |
