No one ever said the Arab world is not a complicated one. Always has been; probably always will be. I doubt it'll ever be Americanized, nor should it be. Bush seems to be treating pan-Arabia much like the American Indians got treated back in the olden days here. Not only won't it work, but it's not right to do.
In relation to OBL, Saddam's style and history of government is contrary, as is his lifestyle. I'd bet Saddam has more in common with Afghanastan's northern alliance warlords than he does with OBL. Consider also that OBL wants confusion reigning in as many Arab nations as possible, as this condition helps him gain strength by being able to offer what may seem like a viable Arab, not American, alternative.
>>>So your opinion that that it's possible to have talks with him and actually gain his assistance in tracking down the real terrorists: Al Qaeda is just wishful thinking.<<<
Perhaps. But maybe not. If he understood a commitment existed to help solve the Israel-Palestinian issue, that the sanctions upon the people of Iraq would gradually be lifted, that there is a plan for tomorrow that's contrary to OBL's terrorist faction--think, he probably fears the growth of this organization as much as we do--he might actually agree to the combination of inspections, monitoring and containment. Linking discussion wth Kaddafi of Libya might not be a bad idea also. But none of this is possible without talking to him, something the Bush Administration is adverse to doing, whether it be Iraq, North Korea and other places. Any way, it's worth a try as an alternative to what will become the outright slaughter of hundreds of thousands of people, including many casualties and deaths of Americans. |
