TB: I've been doing a lot more background on the complete list of PNACers, rather than the eight or so most prominent, so I have been turning up a broader spectrum of scholarship than I would have guessed.

The oldest politicos in the group do seem to be Rumsfeld and his assistant, Cheney, who (I think) first appeared in executive functions in Nixon's Office of Economic Opportunity circa 1970. With the weight of their executive-level service since, I'd guessed they were the lead conservatives in the group and within this administration.

But Bush the Elder has been around the halls of power as long and all have successfully outlasted peers who exited due to various scandals within the Nixon and Reagan admins.

Being cynical and liberal, I also note that the media guy leading the touting of the Al Qaida/Hussein link, Safire, tracks back to his work with Nixon, so I suspect the three share very common philosophies.

I was taken by surprise by Rumsfeld's strident language towards Old Europe. Have I paid insufficient attention in the past or is it unusual for cabinet members to be granted such a long leash to be that outspoken?

Knowing the longheld disdain some conservatives have held towards the existence of the UN, is it conceivable that there's an ulterior strategy at work here? Is part of the plan to set up situations that draw opposition precisely to discredit the UN, with the intent of ending our participation entirely?

I'm starting to think Rummy & Cheney believe the US is capable of being a solo act and they're doing their best to make that happen.

Thanks for your input.
