Qualcomm To Help Vietnam Develop CDMA

Vietnam News Briefs
February 24, 2003

US telecoms group Qualcomm will assist Vietnam to develop software and
CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access), said Qualcomm chairman Irwin Jacobs
at a press conference in Hanoi on February 22.

"We will help Vietnamese telecoms operators to effectively exploit the local
telecoms market and to train IT and telecoms specialists," he said. He also said
that Qualcomm would help Hanoi Telecoms Co. and Saigon Postel Co., two
private ISPs and licensed mobile carriers, to develop CDMA networks.

"We will assist Vietnamese telecoms operators, managers and service providers
in better understanding the advantages of CDMA and help local enterprises to
produce low-priced CDMA end-use equipment, aiming to make Vietnam a
leading country in the region in terms of 3G development," he said.

"Qualcomm will help Vietnam build a complex to produce software used in the
telecoms industry," he said, adding that the scale of the complex will depend on
the Vietnamese Government's decision.

Speaking at the press conference, Vietnam's deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Tan
Dung said his government would create the most favorable conditions possible
for Qualcomm to invest in the country.
