JERUSALEM (AP)--The Palestinian radical Islamic group Hamas said two of its men shot down a U.S.-made Israeli F-16 fighter jet which crashed in northern Israel during a rare snow storm Monday with machine guns, but Israel denied this.

Military spokeswoman Capt. Sharon Feingold dismissed the claim.

"This (the Hamas statement) is completely untrue," she said. "It was a technical failure, and all claims made by Palestinian terror organizations are baseless," she said

The pilot, who ejected, was found by ground troops shortly after the plane went down northwest of the West Bank, about 10 kilometers from the Palestinian town of Jenin, the Haaretz daily said on its Web site.

The $50-million plane went down during a snow storm, but it was not immediately clear if the weather was a factor. There were no casualties.

The military said the plane developed technical problems as it was preparing to land after a routine exercise.
