How many people outside the US think that all of california is sunny and warm year round? How many know where Delaware is on the map? How many know that Death Valley is often the hottest place in the world or that the oldest living things (Bristlecone pines) are located in the mountains near Death Valley. How many think that everyone in L.A. works in the entertainment industry and that everyone surfs? How many know that it usually snows at least once someplace in the city of Los Angeles every year. How many know that Hawaii is the southern most state? Or that Alaska is the northern most and western most, and some would argue the eastern most since one island in the aleutian chain is on the international dateline. How many know that California is the biggest agricultral producer in the U.S.? How many would guess that the water off of Cape Cod in the summertime is much warmer than the water off of the coast of California. How many would unexpectedly have their berries shrivel up when the jump in the water at Santa Monica beach because the water is so freakin cold year round. The fact is, many foreigners view the U.S. as either New York, Los Angeles or florida. And it is likely based on some bullshit television show that they saw. They may know that Chicago exists, but it doesn't really matter in the whole scheme of things.

The fact is, the French should know where Luxembourg is. Just like I should know where Phoenix is. The distance between Washington state and Florida is about the same as Germany to Iraq. They are neighbors, they should know the geography over there better than we do.

We are no more ignorant about the "rest of the world" then anyone else. We naturally know our neighbors better than we know people living halfway around the world, who in reality, in the vast majority of cases, don't have any effect on our lives. Why should it be any different?
