I ran into that same stuff when I was working in Asia. I was surprised to hear some of the things that many in that region believe about the U.S. and especially Israel. It wasn't even exaggerated, it was fantastical stuff. Stuff that could be dismissed with a minimal amount of critical thinking. Not to mention the stuff that was akin to believing in the Easter Bunny.
