"And at this point that's the same as opting out."

No. We will always follow our silly brother...

"At best, modern French culture is maybe 2 centuries old. The world survived without it before that. In another 2 centuries, it will have changed beyond recognition. Somehow I think the planet will keep spinning. The world does not revolve around France, in spite of what they think or want. Everybody else has to ride this horse of change, like it or not. Frankly, I fail to see that everyone else has an obligation to stop in their tracks because the French are cowering in the closet again"

GOOD!! Substitute the word "United States" for France and French!!

"Then why would they choose to be "assimilated" by us? We are not the Borg"

LOL! "Assimilation" is not a choice! :-)

"Frankly, if an American politician were to suggest aggression against Canada, I think he would be handed his head"

At this point--yes. But "assimilation" is an economic and cultural intrusion.

"This goes back a ways, but remember that Iraqi nuclear reactor the Israelis bombed? Know who built it? The French."

Yes. I was well aware of that. I could tell you things about American commerce with enemies that would probably astound you.

"Or maybe you have. They've had more than a little to do with creating your Quebec problem."

I don't know of what connections they may have to the home country (obviously, they do); but I can tell you that I took the trouble to read several books put out by the French Nationalists which were totally propagandist. It reminded me of the Peking Review which I used to read many years ago. But I understand this: any people fighting for their cultural survival would do similar or the same...
