If your broker disappears (goes bankrupt) and you have a larger account than insurance covers (In Canada, $500,000CDN), you could experience some delay before having access to your stocks; and may not recover the uninsured portion. In Canada, this is exceptionally rare. I'm not aware of a single incident, but then the OSC is very tightlipped compared to the SEC.

I was also unaware that any shares in 'streetname' could be loaned rather than just those in margin accounts.

Ian.
