IDT Interprise Processors Power Next-Generation Freebox Multi-Service Gateway Platform

Freebox Capitalizes on IDT Processors' Performance and Functionality to Deliver True ADSL-Based Multimedia Systems with Video, Voice and Data Capabilities

SANTA CLARA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 24, 2003-- Demonstrating the continued momentum behind the IDT(TM) Interprise(TM) family of integrated communications processors, IDT (Integrated Device Technology, Inc.; Nasdaq: IDTI), a leading communications IC company, today announced that Freebox, a France-based innovator of set-top systems, has selected IDT Interprise(TM) processors to power its new multi-service customer premises equipment (CPE) boxes. Based on the devices' performance and functionality, Freebox chose the IDT RC32351 and RC32355 integrated communications processors for their new CPE boxes, including those enabling conventional data-based Internet access, as well as variants that enable video, voice and data services. These boxes are initially being deployed in Paris, France by Free, the country's second largest Internet services provider (ISP) with plans to broaden the availability of this service to other areas of France in the coming years. In addition to the adoption of the IDT Interprise(TM) processors, Freebox leveraged the IDT 79RP351 ADSL reference design, a jointly developed solution from IDT and ST Microelectronics (formerly Alcatel Microelectronics), to capitalize on a time-to-market advantage for their products.

Unlike competitive offerings, the IDT solutions deliver an unprecedented combination of integration and performance to enable the Freebox CPE boxes to support data services such as Internet access for PCs as well as video on demand (VoD) and voice services, making it one of the first true ADSL-based multimedia systems. This unique capability allowed Freebox to create products that deliver unlimited Internet access with a maximum capacity of 1 Mbps, television transmission and voice telephony for its customer base.

"Because our next-generation CPE box includes more functionality than competitive data-only ADSL products, we required a device that offered the right balance of a high-performance CPU core, a range of on-chip interfaces and the integration of peripherals. The IDT Interprise(TM) RC32351 and RC32355 integrated communications processors met these needs perfectly," said Sebastien Boutruche, research and development manager, Freebox. "Further, the IDT 79RP351 ADSL reference design provided a comprehensive solution that accelerated the Freebox product development cycle and enabled us to bring our product to market faster."

"The emergence of new standards, volatile market conditions and the need to increase services to support the gateway market are increasingly driving systems designers to look at highly integrated, high-performance processors, such as the widely adopted Interprise(TM) RC32355 and RC32351 processor solutions," said Matt Jones, marketing manager for the IDT Internetworking Products Division. "The Freebox CPE solutions are great illustrations of the level of integration and capabilities the Interprise(TM) family can deliver for cutting-edge gateway platforms and other innovative next-generation solutions. IDT plans to continue to build the Interprise(TM) family with additional devices to provide performance and system flexibility for next-generation communications applications."
