I have not been in Iraq in recent years, but I have traveled through the area on various occasions.

In general tribes give way to communities and communities grow into a society as a whole and the political system at any given time reflects that society. So to think that you can superimpose a FOREIGN system on a given country that previously has had nothing like it, is misguided at best.

The motivations of this country's leaders are PROJECTED to be "the bringers of freedom". But their real agenda is about MONEY and POWER. The presumed reason for Afghanistan was to "smoke out" Osama bin Laden. The real reason--get the pipeline deal done.

This country has been hijacked by its commercial interests,
combined with its "equipment of war" suppliers. Combine that with its roots in the Christian Right Wing, combined with its pro-Israel zealotry and you have a nasty picture.

Afghanistan is far from over. Haiti was a mess before intervention there and is a mess now. The minimum to be anticipated outcome of this forthcoming war is:

-- huge costs
-- vast increase in debt
-- great damage to the US financial system & the dollar
-- the alienation of our former collaborators
-- the polarization of the Arab world against us
-- the inflamation of terrorist activities against us
-- the destabilization of the Middle East as a whole
-- setting the Palestinian peace process even further back

but hey, we will bring them democracy, right?

WRONG!

Namaste!
