I agree that the US is not concerned with spreading Democracy. This war is all about access to cheap energy & the US agenda is guided by extreme Christian conservatives. We are in agreement over the means for this war. We disagree over the ends. A democratic Iraq is possible. Perhaps not a Democracy in the US or European sense, but with far more freedom than the country possesses today. Bush has backed himself into a corner & is now forced to at least try to install Democracy-see Wolfowitz's comments today.

-Forced Democracy worked in Japan post WW2 against a population that had been brainwashed to hate us.
-Worked in South Korea following Korean war.
-Afghanistan is better off without the Taliban. I still believe the people(especially the women) are far better off. Albeit, they are still impoverished(as before).

The Arab world already hates us. why? because we support Israel? I don't want to get into an Israel debate with you but the Camp David Accord was a great compromise for both sides. It is hard for me to understand the Arab hatred for the US when they turned the proposal down. Unless you feel that Israel has no right to exist.

We give the Arab world billions of $ for oil & they promote hatred of America as a way to keep the focus off their horrendous leaders. The cycle must change.

Middle East could destabilize for the better--Democracy could take root.

Your financial arguments are sound. My only counter is that a friendly government in Iraq is a longterm positive financially for us.

If you could prove to me that Democracy had no chance of taking root in Iraq, I could change my mind & oppose this war. As we see Iranian Democracy struggle to evolve, I believe that with help, Iraq can Democratize.
