Religion - of whatever stripe - has often been used to 'justify' brutal or inhuman actions... and it is also not unheard of for religious leaders (again: regardless of the particular religion) to crave earthly power and dominion over men's affairs... the better to shape them to God's will, of course :)

Here's a third example in Christianity, since we're on the topic: the long dirty stain in America's history that was Jim Crow was uniformly approved of from the pulpit throughout the south... and occasionally railed against from pulpit's in the north.

The KKK professed - and still do - to be the most 'Christian' of organizations.

And, Christians can, most certainly, fight among themselves, from the early days of the Christian Roman Empire (where non-believers were killed in the games as Christians had been earlier)... to the War of the Roses... to WW I and WW II... to Catholic/Protestant problems with us even today in parts of the World.

Apparently, to err is very human....
