Ahold shoppers get a shopping cart scanner for pricing ...

Albert Heijn, Ahold's flagship Dutch supermarket chain, is also checking out self-scan radio frequency technology in a handful of its stores.

As they begin to shop, customers can swipe their loyalty card and be allocated a scanner that hooks onto the shopping cart. As products are selected, customers simply scan in prices as they shop, so speeding their way through to the payment point. Tests are conducted at random to minimize inadvertent or willful misuse and to ensure accuracy of readings.

Initial reactions are extremely positive: busy, time-pressed shoppers value the convenience and extra service of a running sub-total and an accelerated check-out process. For Ahold stores it means associates have more time to focus on serving the customer in-store, rather than staffing the checkout. Currently, around 40 stores have scanner pillars enabling customers to check prices electronically, or to confirm that advertised in-store price matches the one registered at check-out. Self-scanning equipment was first introduced at Albert Heijn stores in the mid-90s.
