When Kennedy took office we were committed politically and militarily to south vietnam. The eisenhower/nixon administration took over in 1956 after the french were defeated. They pledged support and put DIEM in power which was a major blunder. Johnson knew it was a hopeless situation but had little choice but to continue our committment, he even declined to run again for office. Now, when our boy NIXON took reign (remember he was with IKE ) he really stepped things up. He not only bombed vietnam but hell he bombed LAOS an CAMBODIA, a technically illegal act against two neutral countries. Yes Nixon did end the war, but by that time public opinion was heavily against it and he would not have been re-elected without that promise.
