I think if you push someone into desperation there's no telling what they'd do. My read of Saddam is he wants to be the big wheel in the Middle East. How's he gonna do that if he acts in such a way as to surely destroy himself? That he'd use chemicals weapons, which history has already proven he's only used defensively in the past, is speculation at best and certainly not worth turn Baghdad into Stalingrad, a city that saw more people die than all of the American deaths of World War II.
By the way, do you know how to capture a city of 5.5 million people, some of whom are armed themselves, and protected by a reasonably conventionally equipped, territory-knowledgeable and loyal military force of a 100,000 or more? And, if he--which happens to be my theory--is holding back on some chemicals for defensive purposes, would not defense of the homeland be a desperate enough condition to use them?
