The Republicans reduced govt. research into alternative energy by 80% during the 1980s. That certainly set us back by a few years. In any case, we finally are starting to actually see some products hit the markets. Hybrid cars are now available. A hybrid SUV will soon be available. And fuel cell cars aren't far off either. Solar has come down dramatically in cost over the past 20 years. Wind power is now competitive with more traditional sources of energy like coal and nuclear.

Where there's a will there's a way. If we really had a desire to reduce our dependence on ME oil, we would have found a way to do so years ago. But, that desire isn't strong (as demonstrated by the 80% cuts in the 1980s), because it would hurt oil company profits. Money makes the world go round, not Renewable Energy.
