The Byrd is the Word, eh? Don't 'chu know about the bird?Don't worry Chris, I'm not interested in Byrd's racism, I'd rather just reply to his comments.
The Senate is silent on the impending war. Why? Because it knows the disarmament of SadDam needs to take place expediently - for our own protection - by means of War if necessary. Therefore, questions of Pacifism aside, there is nothing to discuss.
America was stunned by the events of Sept. 11th 2001, but America is not mute nor paralyzed with uncertainty. Editorial pages across the country discuss questions of pacifism(though they dare not call it pacifism) which the Senate does not, while the vast majority of Americans(who are not Pacifists) are understood by Senators to support action to prevent the ruthless from achieving their quasi-religious goals through murderous action both at home and in the world at large.
The doctrine of prevention we embark upon is by definition a defensive action. There is nothing radical in this; it is in fact merely prudent. Action in Iraq is understood by many many countries to be needed, prudent, and blessedly preventative(quite in line with international law and U.N. resolutions on Iraq). Some countries conceivably may worry that they will be on our hit list, but countries which have no bad intent not only have no legitimate concern, but they know it well with utter comfort.
There are some fractures in the anti-terrorism alliance that existed after Sept. 11th. These fractures based in misinformation, mistrust, suspicion and alarming revelations of the economic self-interest of dissenting nations, flies in the face of the words which U.S. leaders are using to express the intentions of America. Only the deceived can imagine our intentions are not defensive. We are after all, the attacked, and we seek only to address those who have vowed to attack us, and those who support them.
In the Homeland an inevitable recession which began under the previous administration and has destroyed projected surpluses as far as the eye can see - despite all affirmations and predictions - has come to an end with no apologies from those who presided over its beginnings, only blame for others. The current administration seeks to protect and serve the people(as one hopes have all administrations) and it has presided over the halt of the great downwardly spiraling economic condition it inherited, in under two years.
Shoot, what's the point in finishing this rebuttal to some old worry wart. His brand of nit-picking worry IS what could bring us to inaction and indecision in the face of the eminently actionable.
No WAR is always better than war, so long as both parties agree. Otherwise, someone gets killed. Remember this - OTHERWISE, someone gets killed. Remember. Remember 911 while you are at it, then you'll have no problem understanding the genuinely blessed fruits of righteous action, righteous strength, and war.
Let me allow the following writing from Christiandom do the talking for me as follows:

"Prayer For America
O Thou kind Lord! This gathering is turning to Thee. These hearts are radiant with Thy love. These minds and spirits are exhilarated by the message of Thy glad-tidings. O God! Let this American democracy become glorious in spiritual degrees even as it has aspired to material degrees and render this just government victorious. Confirm this revered nation to upraise The standard of the oneness of humanity, to promulgate the Most Great Peace, to become thereby most glorious and praise- worthy among all the nations of the world. O God! This American nation is worthy of Thy favors and is deserving of Thy mercy. Make it precious and near to Thee through Thy bounty and bestowal. --from the Sacred Writings of the Bahá'í Faith"
