Mumbai: State-owned Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited (MTNL) will complete the process of expanding its cellular capacity for the Mumbai cellular circle over the next ten days.

As earlier reported, the contract for the installation of additional capacity was awarded to Lucent Technologies.

Official sources in MTNL said that the total capacity would now be at 2.25 lakh lines once the new capacity is fully put in place.

“While we initially put in one lakh lines at the time of launch, we have now increased it to bring in more subscribers” they indicated.

MTNL offers both the pre-paid and the post-paid service in the Mumbai and Delhi cellular circles.

In Mumbai, its subscriber base stands at around 1.15 lakh customers out of a base of over 15 lakh subscribers.

The Mumbai cellular circle falls under the metro circle category and is the second largest circle in the country, the largest being Delhi.

Pre-paid accounts for around 65,000 customers while post-paid accounts for the balance. Its pre-paid offering are marketed under the “Trump” brand name while “Dolphin” is the brand name for the post-paid services. Significantly, the percentage of pre-paid subscribers across India out of the total subscriber base is said to be in the region of 65 per cent.

“With the increase in capacity, we have already managed to attract more new subscribers” explained sources. MTNL has already been running an advertising campaign for for its cellular service across different mediums.

It has been observed that MTNL has recorded low rates of subscriber growth which has been attributed to the non-availability of capacity.

MTNL’s primary business is that of providing fixed line services which includes the limited mobility (WLL) offering branded “Garuda.”

In fact, capacity expansion on Garuda is also underway for which the contract has been awarded to Fujitsu.
