I understand it's a problem and it should be stopped. But it's not pork. They are two separate problems.

Leftys use it in that context to change the subject when the topic of profligate government spending comes up.

Me: "Look at this awful waste that comes from all this pork."

Lefty: "I agree completely. We must do away with pork and raise taxes on business."

Me: "Huh!!?!?!"
