Which brings us nicely onto rumour number two: that SBC (one of Cingular's parent companies) has reportedly asked a leading infrastructure vendor to give them a quote for swapping out the Cingular network to CDMA. We'll have no waverers in GSM's new flagship organisation, thank you very much.

SBC is in deep trouble strategically. The FCC decision on wholesaling their copper lines at discounted prices was only the latest problem. SBC insisted on going the GSM/GPRS/EDGE route over BLS's objections, and now they are having problems with the transition. They are spectrum constrained to the point WCDMA would not even be an option, if it existed.

Their interest in DirecTV is a reflection of what I consider a wholesale review of where in the hell they are going to find revenue in the future. I think they would rather have a colon flush than admit their three decisions to not move to CDMA were wrong, but they may well be looking at survival here.
