Gus, thank you for your informed and thoughtful posts.
Europeans and Americans are , in fact, very similar.
Lot of judeo-christian values. What seems to separate
us is perhaps a question of style. As you witnessed, after
US was attacked on 9/11 , we all rallied nearly 100%
as a nation united and decided it was time to do something
about the dangers confronting us. The old sleeping giant
was awakened and we began (and will continue) to target
those who we perceive as enemies. Bush stated...'you are either for us or for the terrorists' Americans are
a direct people. It may have something to do with
how we have become so dominant on the world stage.

As Chirac scolded the eastern EU countries that they missed
a good opportunity to shut-up , so the US feels France
has missed a good opportunity to show solidarity with US.
His claim...'We are all Americans' now seems to be only
words.

Once again, thank you for your posts.
