We haven't?!? We had a floatila of ships stationed in the Persian Gulf during the Iran/Iraq war and escorted oil tankers through the war zone. We were actively supporting Iraq throughout the 1980s in their war effort against Iran, because we were afraid of the spread of radical Islam from Iran to the rest of the Middle East. We were certainly engaged in the Middle East during the Gulf War in 1990/1991. We have been heavily engaged in the Middle East ever since then.

The problem is we haven't had the will to do something about our addiction for Middle Eastern oil. Instead, we are using military solutions to control those oil resources that our economy needs so badly. And those military solutions are inflaming radical muslims and causing them to attack us and our interests. Things don't happen for no reason in this world. There is a cause and effect relationship.
