Karen,

All I can say is that some people are clueless to the plight of the poor in America. (the reasons behind them being poor is another debate please) Just suffice to say that many are poor as a fact and depend on the school lunches. The small petty expense that lunch may seem to us is major to some people.

Charlotte, NC for example is a thriving financial area on the surface. Suburbs are growing, retail space is expanding, etc. A town called Mooresville is on the fringe of this growth. It is probably more famous as the base area for the majority of the Nascar race teams, and soon to be home for the new 2000plus employee Lowe's corporate campus. It is an affluent suburb. Lakefront properties, Super Walmart, etc. My wife teaches first grade in a school there.

Not a week goes by that she doesn't come home with a story of poverty to tell. Yesterday it was the child who needed some forgotten materials brought to school. Parent response: "I don't have enough change left to buy enough gas to bring it there". Last week it was the kid who hadn't worn a pair of socks for the entire week despite the 30 degree temperature. Answer: None. The kid just cried. But he proudly wears the new socks my wife bought him. Of course they haven't seen the laundry yet I hear. The week prior it was the kid who didn't have the $3 fee to go on the class fieldtrip to the museum. Answer: Parent said no money left after buying groceries. The week before it was the child with matted hair and lice and strong odor. Reason? Power cutoff, so well water not working, so no bath, so no clean clothes. And oh by the way.. no heat either.

$200 Billion for politically motivated war? $43 Billion bribe to Turkey? Food for Norht Korea? BUT NOT a dime for a hot nutricional lunch, the one meal we can all assure these underpriviliged kids are well fed at?

I don't know when I have been so disgusted and disillusioned with our government before.
