If you only have a couple of weeks, trying to fit LA in is fairly burdensome

Yes, but it is worth it :-)

I have been to the west coast a couple of times and really loved it. I have friends there who insist I drop by, but I'll see...

(Of course, if you are on an expense account and can travel first class, it is less so).

Not this time, this is personal, but I should have enough Frequent Flier miles to upgrade. However, I was on an expense account of the times I have been to the west coast and loved every minute of my stay in Mandarin Oriental Hotel in San Francisco :-) I remember marveling at the view at dawn from my room on the 35th (?) floor, so jetlagged that I woke up at 4 AM and could not go back to sleep...

although it can get somewhat hot in New York

... and wet! I was there about five years ago in the summer for a road show, and it was extremely hot and then showering rain, alternating every hour or so :-)

They are having a retrospective comparison of Picasso and Matisse at the Museum of Modern Art

I would really like to see that...

One can often find surprisingly good deals for very nice rooms

I am sure. I will not need a hotel, though, since I will be staying with friends (yes, I can and do have American friends, contrary to popular belief on SI) in Manhattan - happily married since I acted as both maid and translator in their wedding a few years ago.

(Not sure if I want to see the wedding video, actually. I was so scared of making a mistake in translation (Do you have ANY idea how difficult the words of a wedding ceremony can be?) that I ran out of breath and the guy who was heading the ceremony asked for a round of applause for the poor translator who was shaking like a leaf :-)
