I asked you once before whether you actually listen to the speeches and read the essays, or whether you just read what the New York Times says about them, and you got all huffy.

"Huffy" is definitely not a term my family would use to describe my demeanor when I get pissed. However, I don't recall that conversation you mention. Obviously, if that's the way you put the question, you meant it as a put down. So I would ignore it or my fingers would get out of control and I would say just how pissed I was.

As for Dowd, she's one of the premier word smiths of our time. Read and learn. That's what she got the Pulitzer for. I preferred Anna Quindlen. Hated to see her go.

As for me, I sat and listened to Powell's entire speech to the UN. I listen to most of his speeches. I listen to every speech that Bush makes. I listen to Rumsfeld. I read what Cheney writes. I listen to Wolfowitz and read what he writes. I listen to Rice and read what she writes.

Well, good for you. Should I go through all of their speeches, whatever, to note the use of emotional rather than logical means to persuade others. The only one on that list that consistently uses something other than emotion (we can argue about logic) is Wolfowitz.

Emotional arguments are the stuff of politics. That's how one moves populations. Not a bad thing, in and of itself. I was simply responding to Nadine's mistaken attribution of logic to government and emotion to opposition. I started to type the old gender canard in which men put down women with that distinction. But decided I wouldn't go there.
