So yes... the news you posted seem to be following a carefully crafted script... and imo it is in the best interest of the US to start using a different strategy than merely that of the bully.... boldly and openly. I think the time of cloak and dagger is a better strategy... the cold war has begun again and using smarts, rather than bombs will have a better pay off. This time the enemy is more dangerous than the Communists ever were... these guys are well heeled, smart and have the means to turn the table around... I am not sure of this but I believe that the Malay and Indonesian Muslims are a tad different from the ME Muslim in the sense that they do not see with good eyes the monarchs of the ME region.... but I am not an expert on this.... normally i would agree with you that the cloak and dagger approach would be best wrt saddam. however... i believe 9/11 has forced our hand.....we simply cannot take the risk that he can start or continue to arm terrorists who, though claim no allegiance to saddam or the other way around, are willing to accept his largesse (ie... payoffs to palestinian suicide bombers families)... this is all about regime change and WMDs. this cold war is much different than the last cold war. during the cold war with the former soviet union, it was not driven by insane religious extremism.... certainly the drive was there for world domination, but underlying that was the normal human drive for self preservation. you don't have that with crazed fundamentalist willing to blow themselves up for their cause. they must be taken out and fear must be instilled in those people who would entertain the idea of killing americans and aussies and brits and jews and anyone is deemed "infidels" and in accordance to their "jihad" saddam has the wherewithal to potentially arm the terrorists to the extent that they will yet again bring destruction on our soil. one way or the other, he's gotta go. oil or no oil
