Sig,

I think it's now only partially about Saddam. The issue has taken a life of its own. I think it's a momentous one in the sense that it is about defining our future role in the world. Are we the hegemon who acts in an unbridled way or do we listen and are restrained by others?

The manner in which the process of defining our future role will be played is in its nascent stage, and all actors are a bit brutish and unsophisticated because of that very fact. Ultimately, the world will accept our good intentions and leadership while we will learn to take the legitimate interests of others into account in formulating our policies.

It's quite unfortunate that Saddam is the issue which will define us for decades to come. He is bad news. If unchecked, he'll be devastating to the West.
