<<The Republicans reduced govt. research into alternative energy by 80% during the 1980s. That certainly set us back by a few years. >>

Coulda fooled me. I've been in the energy industry for over 18 years; back then there were plenty of govt grant opportunities for alt energy. Most of them were pie-in-the-sky with unrealistic objectives, and impossible guidelines fraught with endless paperwork.

I'm not sure how paperwork contributes to developing new energy sources.

<<Hybrid cars are now available. A hybrid SUV will soon be available. And fuel cell cars aren't far off either. >>

Toyota's got a fuel cell SUV.

<<Solar has come down dramatically in cost over the past 20 years. >>

Solar photo-voltaic cells are made with highly carcinogenic waste products. Added costs. They are also not easy or cheap to dispose of at end-of-life. Very costly.

<<Wind power is now competitive with more traditional sources of energy like coal and nuclear. >>

No kidding. So why is the liberal Water Cronkite opposed to wind power? Could it be a not-in-my-backyard deal by the limosine liberal Cronkite?

oh, perish the thought !!

<< If we really had a desire to reduce our dependence on ME oil, we would have found a way to do so years ago. But, that desire isn't strong (as demonstrated by the 80% cuts in the 1980s), because it would hurt oil company profits. >>

Again, you make the naive error of thinking govt can mandate our lives from the top-down. You yourself will not buy a fuel - efficient compact car. But you want the Fed govt to mandate fuel-efficient compact cars into each of our lives. huh??

Your behavior contradicts your statements. "Do as I say, not as I do."
