Well, I hope I'm wrong. I hope McCarthy (and his methods) doesn't get rehabilitated; and I hope the Administration is not serious about this serial Nation-Building (which seems indistinguishable from colonialism). I hope that hard experience will teach them the Limits of their Reach.
If I'm wrong, I'll just talk about it, and do nothing.
If I'm right, however, then I will go back to protesting in the street, something I haven't done in 25 years. There are lots of people like me, who grew up, got their JD, MD, or MBA, got a job and a mortgage, haven't done much politically for a generation. But we haven't changed our Beliefs since we chained ourselves to the gates of nuclear plants many years ago.
30 years ago, we stopped a war. Today, we have a lot more money, a lot more power, a lot more ability to organize and GetThingsDone. And we have a lot of institutional support that didn't exist 30 years ago, support from surprising places, where the War is being questioned, places like the Pentagon and the CIA. If we are sufficiently provoked, we can stop this war, too.
But I hope you're right, so I can just continue to live my quiet comfortable life. I am the New Silent Majority. |
