Sure. Our troops sweating it out in the desert, while encirling Baghdad for several months? I doubt this will or could happen.
And what would the French have us do?? Continue the inspections while 150,000 US troops sat in Kuwait, Turkey, and other parts of the region doing nothing but making inviting targets for terrorists, both as propaganda and military targets, while the French ACT like they might really try and force Saddam to disarm??
Come on now... that's not even in the realm of possibility.. If US troops are going to be sitting in the desert, it will be on OUR terms, not the French..
Given America's track record on helping South and Latin American youth,
Actually, now that the cold war has ended, we've seen considerable advancement toward democracy and economic plurality in Latin America. During the cold war, admittedly the US policy was stability at any cost, even if it meant supporting petty dictators. But dictators are relatively easy to overthrow, while totalitarian systems such as exists in Iraq are another issue altogether. They only fall when they implode as the USSR did, or when overthrown by external forces, as in Nazi Germany.
That might have been so when they were being run out of Kuwait. But it's a bit different defending one's own homeland.
Uh-huh.. Sure... I can really see the common Iraqi fighting to the death for Saddam...
I think any general will tell you that there's no such thing as a textbook war. And that appears to be what you think will happen. You might wish to reconsider.
Of course.. the phrase is "no plan survives first contact with the enemy"..
But there's another quotation that is particularly pertinent to the American military..:
Quote from a German general officer: "The reason that the American Army does so well in wartime, is that war is chaos, and the American Army practices chaos on a daily basis."
American military officers are trained to deal with unexpected issues and to use problem solving and innovation to accomplish the mission.
You have some honestly expressed opinions PartyTime.. But I'm not convinced of ther veracity, or inevitability.
What I am convinced of, is that with 40% of the muslim world (50% in Saudi Arabia) consisting of under-18 individuals devoid of any current prospect for a better life than their parents, it is inevitable that Islamo-Fascist militancy will continue to grow no matter what we do, or don't do..
All we can do is try and shape the future these young people are facing for the better. To take positive actions as we have been in Iran, encouraging moderation and tolerance, as well as entrepreneurialship.
