Re: The impact of older GSM technology on EDGE performance.

Once again thanx for all your great EDGEucation. It's going to take me a while to digest your current offerings. I also want to digest some 3GSM slides on the matter and, more importantly, I owe Eric a response to his "Why Edge" post of days gone by. I leave you with this thought though.

>>>>> key reason to the increased importance of power level control in GSM is actually EDGE

Given that power level control was not as important in the old GSM days, how likely is it that older GSM handsets operate outside of the permissible tolerance levels for EDGE?

I'd suspect such a situation would dictate the need for carriers to encourage subscribers to replace these older handset as part of their quest to promote EDGE. Such promotion should be good for GSM/GPRS handset vendors and it may well dictate that the replacement market for GSM handsets will far exceed the new subscriber markets. Having a good rational for upgrades has to be good for all industry participants.

I'll try to get back to our EDGE discussion next week.
