oh, absolutely, I'm sure it is. The only problem is that although getting into and staying in office is crucial for them, it's what they do once they're there that is crucial for all of us. So it would be nice if some of them actually bothered to think seriously a bit about how to further the national interest when handling actual substantive issues, rather than making all their decisions on the basis of lobbying, fundraising, special interest group pressures, etc. Go back to that letter of D'Iulio's: in the past there was often an attempt to balance substance and politics, or at least let both have their say. All too often today, especially in Congress, it's 100% the latter. Shame.
