Voters here in Oregon rejected a temporary increase in income taxes, despite a very strong advertising campaign from the tax-hike supporters.

My belief is that Portland mayor Vera Katz is not doing enough to cut frivolous programs and instead is playing up this crisis for purposes of PR. Just recently she was patting herself on the back for averting a teachers' strike. Part of the deal reached with the teachers is a potential new tax on Portland businesses. Yep, and those businesses are doing SO WELL, what with unemployment highest (or 2nd highest?) in the nation.

The whole notion is that if you are against tax hikes, you are against educating your children. Most people in Oregon aren't fooled by that.
